BROWNFIELD EXPERT CURTIS SLOCUM JOINS VOIT DEVELOPMENT COMPANY TEAM

  • Firm continues to focus on large significant projects and Brownfield development

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif., (May 27, 2008) – Voit Development Company, one of Southern California’s leading commercial real estate development firms, has announced the addition of Brownfield expert Curtis Slocum to its team.  Voit Development Company continues to focus on large significant projects and Brownfield developments throughout the Western Region of the United States.

“Our firm is looking towards Brownfield redevelopments to not only transform obsolete or dilapidated sites or buildings into quality business parks and developments, but also as an opportunity to improve the land, remove blight, raise the tax basis, create jobs and increase the value of the land surrounding these projects,” explained Robert D. Voit, president of The Voit Companies.

Slocum is responsible for identifying under-utilized, environmentally impacted Brownfield sites throughout the Western Region of the United States for acquisition by Voit Development Company.  Slocum will also oversee the entitlement and acquisition of these sites, as well as each sites’ remediation for profitable redevelopment thereafter.

“Voit understands how to develop and implement the strategy of facility remediation and closure with large corporations, as well as how to process large amounts of data and structure a deal to manage the risks associated with the redevelopment.  Most companies do not have the experience or expertise in this unique development opportunity,” explained Curtis Slocum.

Slocum has more than 25 years of experience in the remediation and redevelopment of industrial, commercial and military real estate.  He has managed major redevelopment projects and programs for General Motors, General Electric, Ford Motor Company, Dow Chemical, the U.S. Navy, Air Force and Army, as well as managing individual contracts worth more than $250 million.  Prior to joining the firm, Slocum was a senior vice president for the Sares-Regis Group and was responsible for the acquisition and remediation of Brownfield site projects throughout Southern California.

“The extensive amount of experience in Brownfield redevelopment Slocum brings to Voit Development Company will assist our firm in continuing to pursue large-scale Brownfield development opportunities,” added Voit.

Voit Development Company’s Brownfield experience is comprised of high-scale projects including:

  • Brea Business Park, a 30-acre tank farm site that had been used for oil and gas distribution by both its previous owners, Tosco and Unocal.  Voit Development completed a remediation of all contaminated soil and removed antiquated pipelines and desolate oil tanks.  After the remediation, the firm developed and sold out the largest speculative industrial development in North Orange County in the past decade, Voit Brea Business Park, a 533,750 square-foot 18-building industrial park.
  • Kwikset, a subsidiary of Black & Decker, sold a contaminated industrial site in which Voit Development remediated the contaminated site in partnership with the City of Anaheim Redevelopment Agency and sold it to the City of Anaheim for residential development.
  • Burbank Airport Commerce Center, in which Voit redeveloped the former Lockheed Martin aerospace land with environmental challenges into a 480,000 square-foot industrial/R&D business park.
  • FreshPoint Build-to-Suit Headquarters, where Voit Development transformed an obsolete factory with groundwater and soil contamination located within a regional Superfund into a high-quality job-creating business park by developing an 110,000 square-foot build-to-suit and two speculative buildings on the 20-acre site.
  • The Plant, in which Voit Development acquired a former General Motors automobile assembly plant site that remained unused and completely under-utilized.  Voit Development, in a joint-venture with Selleck Development Company, created a 1.2 million square-foot retail/entertainment center and industrial park, which helped improve the surrounding area.
  • Tustin Gateway Business Park, a former Steelcase facility, had an underground storage tank that leaked and caused groundwater contamination.  Voit Development worked with seller to clean up the site and redeveloped into a quality business park.

With more than 15 years experience within Brownfield redevelopment, Slocum’s expertise has made him a regular guest speaker at Brownfield redevelopment conferences such as the National Brownfield Association and California Redevelopment Association conferences.  Previously, Slocum held senior management positions at two international engineering firms, Arcadis and Earth Tech, managing large environmental remediation, redevelopment and construction programs.

A graduate of Central Michigan University and USNA Post Graduate School, Slocum has Bachelors’ Degrees in Industrial Management and Naval Engineering. He also served as an officer in the U.S Navy and held a Top Secret Security Clearance.
